Mihai’s incredible life lesson – with am amputated leg, from fight for survival to his own prosperous business
Almost four years ago, Mihai Viloi (43 years old) was fighting for survival with his family – his wife and seven children. He was living in a poor Romanian village, with an amputated leg and a small handicap pension. The family was lucky enough to be chosen in a social program of a private company, “Biomin Farming” – they received a pig and ten chickens, and feed for them, and the condition was to give forward to another family in need piglets and eggs. Mihai was so grateful for the chance they had, mobilized his whole family and worked hard. Seeing this, wonderful people from the private company helped him with a performing prosthesis for his leg, and today, almost four years after, Mihai is a wonderful example of what can be done with ambition, passion, hard work and a lot of soul. From one pig, he owns now his own pig farm, sells pigs through a government program, had a meeting with the Romanian minister of agriculture and is working to finish a new big house for his wonderful family. Children have excellent results at school, many of them sing on different musical instruments and the whole family is working to develop the business – with dedication, responsibility and lot of love.
Mihai lost one leg 20 years ago – was stabbed with an infected knife and the doctors had to amputate it. He had a small pension because of his handicap, and was living with his wife and their seven children in a very small house – it was not an easy living, at all, on the contrary.
In 2016, Viloi family was lucky enough to be chosen in a social program of Biomin – a private animal nutrition company that produces feed additives, premixes and services for healthy and profitable animals. Through “Biomin Farming” program they received a pig and ten chickens, and feed for them, and the condition was to give forward to another family in need piglets and eggs.
Mihai knew it was the chance of their life – so he mobilized the whole family and all worked hard. Seeing this, wonderful people from the private company helped him with a performing prosthesis for his leg. “From that point on I could work properly”, Mihai proudly says, and then describes everything as a collective effort – everyone from the family contributed to a wonderful dream came true.
They attended specialized courses at the local Agricultural Direction in Sibiu, a city close to Nou, their native village. He became authorized producer, his wife and his son, authorized breeders. The family business grew little by little.
Today, he is an example of how a business started from scratch can be developed with hard work, passion, dedication and trust. They sold pigs through a government program, Mihai had a meeting with the Romanian minister of agriculture in his office in Bucharest, the capital of Romania, when minister visited the local county came to his farm, also.
Mihai also works at another farm, his son has an extra job, too. In summer, for instance, he wakes up at 3 and a half in the morning, between 5 and 8 works at the farm where he is hired, then from 9 o’clock till evening in the family farm. With piglets works the whole family, parents and children, no one complains, all work with passion and gratefulness – few people had the extraordinary chance they did.
Seven extraordinary children
Mihai and Daniela have 7 children – and are so proud of them all. Nicolae (19 years old) is their biggest support. Sonia (13 years old) goes to school and attends classes of modern dances, Ana (11 years old) goes to school and sings at violoncello, Mihai (10 years old) goes to school and sings at drums, Rudmina (9 years old) sings in the school choir, Ciuraliana (5 years old) and Esmeralda (4 years old) go both to the kindergarten.
Mihai graduated general school only, 8 classes, because the economic conditions did not allow him to go further. He hopes his children will have other chances, and this is what he is fighting for every day. “My family and my children always come first, the fact that we have so many children is a gift from God. We hope we can make as much good as possible, for them. I wish things will be easier for them, this is what I want”, he says.
The small house and the big dream
The whole family shares now a very small house – and when I say very imagine two matchboxes-rooms, a small hall transformed into kitchen also and a bathroom added lately. Mother and five kids sleep in one small room, father and big son, in the other.
But thanks to their work, huge help of their protectors and farm’s development, a big wonderful house for the whole family is almost ready. Luckily, they will succeed in moving there this year. Mihai did a lot of things all by himself, “I never knew carpentry, masonry, but I did. I learn everything, even when I was at a meeting with the minister of agriculture I was able to manage”, he says.
The dreams. The lesson
I’m looking at the girls – with their hands, tenderly, around their father’s neck. “I would like to become a lady, and teach violoncello lessons”, Ana says. Sonia dreams to go to art school, and teach drawing after. Daniela is looking from the door of the small room, with tears of emotion in her eyes. “He is so good, and mobilizes us all”, she says.
She is doing homemade donuts, fries sausages made in their farm, polenta and brings homemade pickles and cheese. The small house smells like heaven – of good food and a lot of love. And you can’t go without eating together – they receive guests with joy, offer them the best food they have and pieces of their wonderful hearts, also.
“Of course there are ups and downs in life, my children always mobilized me. Ciuraliana is from twins – in 29 days her sister died, it was a moment I said I would fail, but I went on, they always motivate me to go further and further”, Mihai says.
He hopes he will succeed in doing a small abattoir, also to develop the family business – and he certainly will. He is determined, works hard and never, but never gives up – because he is convinced every challenge is a chance to build a better life for his wonderful family.
